Cool Congress “The First Mistake” Live at Lee’s Palace, Toronto 1991

The First Mistake

Now she was June and I was fall

She damned me when I damned it all

As a criminal

Having eyes of jade beneath a wave

Lost in an ocean of sun that will always remain

Just that way

And the first mistake was the rain

And the first mistake was the rain

And the city stood as glass and stone

With a moon that chilled her to the bone

Then she smiled soon

She lied on me, I lied on her

Lying so often, we learned to lie well

How can anyone tell?

And the first mistake was the rain

And the first mistake was the rain

A soul was lost when a heart was crossed

Thinking logically the rain just wasn’t enough

To ruin the night

The moon disappeared and that arose the fear

That it was a sign a storm was near

She was overreacting again

And the first mistake was the rain

And the first mistake was the rain

She was getting tired and I was getting hot

I suggested a solution for both, she thought not

Some things never change

I was doubting just how profound was this outing

Closing my eyes to keep my conscience blind

But that never works

And the first mistake was the rain

And the first mistake was the rain

And the first mistake was the rain

And the first mistake – was the rain
